GEO. WAKEFIELD DIED FROM BULLET WOUND

Was Shot by Ernest Crozier, Who Had Married his Niece - Spinal Severed

After seven weeks of effort to retain life with his spinal cord severed by a bullet fired by Ernest Crozier Sep. 3, George Wakefield died at the hospital Tuesday evening. It will be remembered the men had some difficulty in the road while alone at the George Brand home southeast of Piano where Crozier had gone to milk and look after a horse, and Wakefield came by while he was there. The grand jury after investigating the affair considered Crozier had been justified in using self defense and did not entail the county in expense by returning an indictment. Wakefield was able after he was shot to drive on till he got assistance, and the next day was brought to the hospital. He seemed to improve and went to a brother's, but growing worse he was brought back. After his death an examination showed that the spinal cord was severed and the vertebrae injured making it impossible for him to recover. Burial was at the Philadelphia church northeast of Piano, the services being conducted Wednesday by Rev. L. Shaffer.

The man who shot him, Ernest Crozier, lives in Piano. It is said the feud between them arose some years ago when Crozier worked at Wakefield's mother's, loved and married a niece of George Wakefield who made her home there, had difficulty with George, and has made his home in Piano, being looked upon as a good citizen and an inoffensive man .The deceased is said tohave figured in numerous episodes that indicated he was given to quarrelsomeness.
