James L. Raines, age 89, of Murphysboro, passed away at 5:00 a.m. Monday, May 26, 2008, at the Memorial Hospital in Carbondale, Illinois.

James was born on March 18 1919, in Murphysboro, to Albert James Raines and Phoebe (Douglas) Raines.

He served in the U.S. Navy Seebees during World War II.

He was a carpenter. On October 14, 1951, he joined Carpenters Local # 604, which is now Carpenter's Local # 638 of Marion, Illinois.

Mr. Raines joined Elm Street Baptist Church in the fall of 1940, where he presently served as a deacon emeritus. He was a very active member, and he had also served as trustee of the church and Sunday School Teacher.

Jim married Doris Schuster on March 30, 1940, in Jackson, Missouri, and she preceded in death on December 2, 2006.

He is survived by four children and their spouses:Kay and David Morefield of Chino Valley, AZ, Gary W. and Judy Raines of Murphysboro and David E. and Carol Ann Raines, all of Murphysboro, and Debbie and Joe Moore of Carbondale;ten grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and one great great granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by one son James Albert Raines, one grandson, four brothers, four sisters, and his parents.
