MURPHYSBORO - Cecil Ray Chancey, 79, of 1911 Spruce St., died Sunday, Nov. 6, 1994, in St. Joseph Memorial Hospital.

A private memorial service for the family will be held at a later date. There will be no visitation. Crawshaw Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Chancey retired in 1990 as owner of C. Ray Chancey Real estate. He also had operated the former Ray-mar Restaurant in Murphysboro from 1942 until 1960.

He was Jackson County Democratic Central Committee chairman from 1966 until 1991, and was a precinct committeeman for 45 years. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Murphysboro, where he was instrumental in securing the real estate for the church expansion.

He was a 59-year member of the Murphysboro Elks, a member of the Murphysboro Chamber of Commerce, Sallie Logan Public Library, and the Jackson County Country Club. He was a charter member of the Murphysboro Canada Club, the Jackson County Historical Society, and the Murphysboro Junior Chamber of Commerce, and was active on the committee that secured the former Lustour Corporation's move to Murphysboro. He was active in the Murphysboro PRIDE group, was chairman of the 22nd Congressional District for several years, and was active on other Democratic boards and committees throughout Illinois,

He was born Dec. 4, 1914, in Murphysboro, to Walter Allen and Hallie Mae (Smith) Chancey. He married Mary J. Richardson on Aug. 11, 1940. She survives.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
