Thomas Edward Rains, Sr, 87, of Murphysboro, passed away at 2:12 a.m. Sunday, March 29, 2020, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
Thomas was born on August 28, 1932, in Murphysboro, Illinois, to Thomas Jefferson Rains and Essie Madgalene (Ellis) Rains.
Mr. Rains had worked as a logger and did sawmill work. He was also a farmer, and an inventor.
He married Joyce Lindsey on September 2, 1954, in Murphysboro, Illinois, and she survives.
Other survivors include five children Debra Powers of Anna, Thomas (Kelly) Rains, Jr. of Jonesboro, Mary Allsup of Elkville, Norma Alene Tellor of Murphysboro, and Jonathan E. Rains of Alto Pass; twelve grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, and one great great grandson; one brother Earl Rains of Anna; and three sisters Betty Jean Deck of Staunton, IL, Joyce Ann Leeper of Murphysboro, and Regina "Sue" Eberts of Dongola.
He was preceded in death by one sister Freda Tripp and his parents.
Gravesite services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 2, 2020, at Walker Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital. For more information, please visit www.pettettfuneralhome.com.
