Joe Dean Grammer, 91, of Murphysboro passed away at 7:30pm on Sunday, March 28, 2021 at his home. Joe was born in Pomona, IL., on September 21, 1929, a son to the late Hobart Garrett and Bessie (Raynor) Grammer. He was united in marriage to Ruth Elizabeth Keller in Corinth, MS., on July 24, 1954. Ruth survives, of Murphysboro.

Joe attended the Church of the Nazarene in Murphysboro; he was a United States Army veteran serving during the Korean conflict. Joe was the retired owner and operator along with his son, John, of Grammer Septic Service in Murphysboro, a business he began in 1965 when Hiram Walker closed. He could often be seen riding in the truck and making service calls daily with John and enjoyed the relationships he built with Southern Illinoisans throughout the years. He was a lifelong member of the Murphysboro American Legion and the Murphysboro VFW and served on the Alto Pass Veterans Memorial committee. He was very proud that he was selected to participate in the Inaugural Honor Flight of Southern Illinois. Joe loved fishing, gardening, barbecuing, spending time with his family, and telling stories.

In accordance with his wishes, cremation has been accorded. Graveside services with military rites by Paul Stout American Legion Post 127 of Murphysboro will be on Friday, April 2 at 1:00 pm at Murdale Gardens of Memory near Murphysboro; Rev’s Jim Frye and Cliff Waller will officiate. Joe’s family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions be made to the Church of the Nazarene in Murphysboro, Veterans Honor Flight of Southern Illinois, or the Alto Pass Veterans Memorial.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth E. Grammer of Murphysboro, one daughter Deborah (Arlyn) Melcher of Tucson, AZ; two sons and daughters-in-law, Chuck and Kim Grammer and John and Theresa Grammer, all of Murphysboro. Granddaughters Hollie (Fred) Weber, Jessica Grammer (Austin Flamm), and Karissa (Bryan) Lemon. Great-grandchildren Trinity and Kenderick Weber and Eliza Ruth Lemon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister and brother in law, Evelyn and Howard Miles, nephew Michael Miles, and several other special friends and family members.
