PEORIA - Fred Snider "Snide" Etherton, 78, died peacefully at 11 p.m. Friday (June 2, 2006) at home in Peoria. He was born in Carbondale on Dec. 31, 1927, the son of Helen Songer Etherton (Tengen) and Dr. Fred Snider Etherton Sr.

He attended schools in Carbondale and Hoopeston, where he graduated after three years of high school. Through the Holloway Program, he attended Southwestern University and Bradley University, before graduating from Southern Illinois University with a degree in nautical engineering. While serving as a naval aviator, he earned a Distinguished Flying Cross, four Air Medals, five Battle Stars and a Navy Unit Citation during the Korean War. He resigned from the regular Navy and took a commission in the Naval Reserve.

After working as regional and national sales manager for Joan of Arc and for Stokely Van-Camp, he began Central Brokerage Co. with his wife, Patricia, and served as owner-operator for the past 27 years.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Waldo Etherton; his second wife, Patricia Hammer Etherton; and his daughter, Carol Ann Ehmke.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Moore Etherton; a sister, Marilyn (Ralph) Curry, Sterling; two daughters, Janet (Steven) Jungk, Jerseyville, and Christine (Bill) Ruth, Greeley, Colo.; three stepdaughters, Abby (Bob) Humbles, Terri Anderson and Shirley Moore; two stepsons, Joseph Moore and Linden (Deborah) Moore; 21 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was an active in Little Theater; First Christian Church, Peoria; First Presbyterian Church, Hoopeston; Hubbard Trail Country Club; and the Republican Party. He was passionate about his family, sports, entertaining and Japanese gardening and architecture. He always had a smile on his face, a hearty laugh, and a joke to share.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. today at First Christian Church, 6400 N. University, Peoria. An additional memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church, Hoopeston. Visitation will be two hours before each service, with the Revs. Ann Schwartz and Wade Meranda officiating.

A memorial fund has been established in his name at the First Presbyterian Church, PO Box 297, Hoopeston, IL 60942.
