CROZIER IS AT LIBERTY

GEO. WAKEFIELD IN A CRITICAL CONDITION

TWO SIDES TO THE AFFAIR

Sympathy is Said to be Generally With Crozier - Wakefield Said to Have Had a Bad Reputation

While Geo. Wakefield lies helpless at the hospital with the outcome uncertain Ernest Crozier, who fired two shots into him Monday evening is out on bond awaiting the action of the grand jury. He was brought to this city Tuesday evening by Constables Hambleton and Ware, arraigned Wednesday before Justice Zimmer, and bond given for his appearance.

CROZIER'S SIDE OF IT

It is said that Crozier's friends justify him from the view they take that Wakefield has been notorionsly quarrelsome and had threatened Crozier before. The story goes that Crozier came to George's mother's home east of Plano, was employed, fell in love with a granddaughter of Mrs. Wakefield, married her, and now lives in Piano in a pleasant little home where they have a bright little baby a few months old. While at the Wakefield home it is said the feud arose and Frank threatened him. The story goes that Monday he had been on the river fishing, had borrowed Friend Kirkland's rifle, and when he went to the George Brand place to attend to a cripple horse and milk his cow he had it in the buggy, Wakefield came by, drew a revolver, threatened him, and Crozier grabing the rifle fired on him, breaking the repeater after the second shot. It is said Wakefield got out of his buggy with his revolver, but in the fracas climbed-back and Crozier shot him.

WAKEFIELD'S SIDE

The Wakefield story is said to be that on coming down the road from Jerome on his way to his sister's Mrs. Henry Cross, he saw Crozier watching for him at the Brand house, where no one was at home, and without warning he was fired on. Then he drove to his mother's, but she not understanding he was shot did not ask him to stop, and he went on to his sister's, Mrs. Cross, telling them a man injured needed attention, but they not taking him in and now saying they did not know it was a relative till they had gone. Finally he was taken to another sister's, Mrs. John Inskeep. Frank Brand lives about 1 1/2 miles southeast of Piano, Mrs. Wakefield 1 1/4 miles east, and Cross's 3/4 mile north and 1/4 east of Wakefield's.

Wakefield has not lived with his wife for sometime, but she lives in Mystic. They have a family of three sons and four daughters. The injured man has been living at Jerome.
