Description:
I received E-mail in October 2001 from Christine containing information on the descendants of Joel Swindell
Joel Swindell and Metilda Grant were my Great Grandparents. Joel was in the Civil War and received a war pension and is buried in Grants Chapel Cemetery in Arkansas. This is close to Hot Springs. His Children were: Joel Fill Swindell Mary Swindell Willie Swindell Ora Swindell Benjamin Ceal Swindell (My grandfather. He lived to be 103 years old.) ------------- He [Benjamin Ceal Swindell] did tell me he left home (at the time in Arkansas) and came to Oklahoma. He said he rode a horse, and all he seen was tall grass and indians. He met my grandmother here and married and then they went back to Arkansas for awhile but soon came back to Okla. I have a copy of the Civil War Pension Application that Joel Joseph Swindell made. It says That in 1901 he applied for this pension in Arkansas. He served in the 3rd Mississippi Battalion from 1861 to April 1865 (Infantry). That he was shot in the right knee at Chickamoga, Tennessee. Petition for Re Instatement On Pension List Of Hot Spring County, Arkansas To The Board Of Pensions Of Spring County Arkansas The petitioner herein, Joel Swindell would respectfully show to this nonorable board that he was for several years a pensioner under the laws of this State by reason of service in the Confederate Army, and that his Proof of Service is on file in the Auditor's office of the State of Arkansas: that in September 1908, he removed from this State to Texas and ceased to draw any pension; that about a year ago, he again settled in Hot Spring County Arkansas and now resides in said County as his permanent residence; that by direction of the Auditor of the State Of Arkansas whose letter is hereto attached, he is now applying to this board for re-instatement as a pensioner as a Confererate Soldier. Petitioner states that he is now 76 years of age , owns no property in the world, and has a wife who is also old and disabled. Wherefore, he asks that he be re-instated so as to permit him to draw his regular Confederate pension under the laws of this state. Sworn to and subscribed before me this 12th day of July 1915. It shows that he would get $50.00 pension. ----------- I found some notes that my mother has written down before she passed away. I did find where Matilda was buried, where my mother always said she was but I was trying to find Swindell and she was going by Swindle. This is the reading on her headstone. M. A. Swindle Born 18, Oct. 1840 Died 29, Dec. 1926 Wife of Joel Swindle This is in Restland Cemetary, Cunningham, Texas. I also found who her parents were. John Grant born about 1818 in South Carolina or Georgia Married Rebecca born About 1823 South Carolina or Georgia. Married About 1840 in Alabama. Children: Matilda Grant b. Abt 1840 in Alabama John H. Grant b. Abt. 1847 in Alabama Benjamin F. Grant b. 12 Nov. 1849 In Alabama died 11, 29, 1915 Hot Springs, Arkansas Aney E. Grant b. Abt 1851 in Alabama Puss Grant b. Abt. 1853 in Mississippi or Alabama Rebecca Grant b. Abt 1855 in Mississippi James L. Grant b. Abt. 1860 Henry Harry Grant b. Abt 1866 Dovie Grant b. Abt. 1866 There is a lot of information on Matilda's brother Benjamin in the Arkansas genealogy. He is the one that gave the land for the Grant Chapel Cemetary in Arkansas. And one thing I don't understand is why Joel went by Swindell and Matilda went by Swindle. I feel that maybe her son she was living with at the time may have went by the old family spelling of the name.
