ETHERTON, IVAN "HUGH," 82, of Fairdale, passed away Sunday, July 31, 2011. He was retired from Buddeke Coal Co. Hugh loved the Fairdale community. He served as the president of the Fairdale Community Club, he began the Fairdale fair parade and the Miss Fairdale pageant. He was also instrumental in beginning the Fairdale Park & Pool and the Fairdale Citizen. Hugh worked with the Boy Scouts locally. Hugh was first a family man, who loved nothing more than having all his family home with him. Hugh shared his love for collecting Jim Beam bottles and made friends locally, nationally and internationally through this shared hobby. Hugh was among a small group of citizens who formed the Fairdale Church of Christ which met at the Fairdale Playtorium which is now Auburndale Church of Christ, where Hugh has been an active member. Preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Ethel Etherton; and sister, Verna Heavrn. Survived by his wife of 62 years, the former Lorene Riggs; son, Eddie (Madge); daughters, Karyn Gayle Etherton (Wayne) and Lynda Lykins (Ray); grandchildren, SSG Ronnie Mason (Starr), Bethany Coleman (Sam), Grant Lykins (Victoria), Dawn Terry, Chelsea Etherton, Daryl Mason and Caysea Etherton; great-grandchildren, Casady, Ryan and Josh Mason, Gabriel Terry, Dane and Walker Coleman, Samuel Mason, Brooklyn Lykins, Mason Etherton, Abbi and Gracey Mason and Delaney Coleman; brother, Don Etherton (Peggy); sister, Jean Elzy (Clyde). Funeral service will be noon Wednesday at Fairdale-McDaniel Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 411 Fairdale Road, with burial in Mt. Holly Cemetery. Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Tuesday and after 9 a.m. on Wednesday until time of service. Memorial donations may be made to his church.
