Smith Oct 23, 1844 [marriage certificate says 1845). To them were born eleven children, two daughters and nine sons. The two daughters and three sons preceeded their father to the better world.

In 1855 he removed with his family to Madison County IA, where in 1861 he enlisted in the Union Army, Co G 3rd Iowa Vol Infantry and served until 1864 when he was honorably discharged from service on account of disease of eyes and loss of sight. Etherton until a few months ago he went to Beatrice for medical treatment and from there was taken to the residence of his son at Bloomington NE where he died Feb 28, 1903 at the ripe old age of 79 years 10 months and 13 days. He united with the M.E. Church at the age of 18 years and was always a faithful member.

He leaves a wife and six sons who with his host of friends will greatly miss his pleasant company.

Through all his suffering he bore his affliction with great patience ans was ready and anxious for the time when his soul might take its flight heavenward from the frail tenement of clay.

The body was laid to rest in the cemetery at Franklin NE Mar 2, 1903, by his comrads of the G.A.R. with their solemn funeral rites.

To mother Etherton and his children we tender the sympathy of loving friends and neighbors and the aid and comfort of his veteran comrads in "Fraternity Charity and Loyalty".
