Gary Lee Varner, 75, of Murphysboro, passed away at the Marion IL VA Medical Center, at 4:55, Friday, October 8, 2021.
Gary was born on March 2, 1946, in Murphysboro, to Ray H. Varner and Millie (Norman) Varner.
He served in the U.S. Navy on board the U.S.S. Dixie AD 14.
Mr. Varner had worked at the former Lustour and Curwood Plants as a Press Operator for 29 years.
He was a member of the American Legion Post # 127.
Gary married Mary Clutts on August 1, 1966, in Murphysboro, IL they divorced and he married Elizabeth Ann Moutell Parks June 18, 1977 in Murphysboro, IL.
He is survived by five children Laura Varner (Shorty Kelley) of Murphysboro, Becky (Scott) Biggerstaff of Mountain Home AR, Diana (Keith) Keipp, Steven and Sammule Varner, all of Murphysboro.
Also surviving are six grandchildren: Paula Stuthers (Bernel Smith) of Columbus, IN, Ray and (Jessica) Stuthers, Erik Stuthers (Stephanie Glodo), Bostyn Keipp of Murphysboro, IL, Heather (Ty Staggs) Beyen, Ariel (Matt) West of Mountain Home, AR.
Ten great-grandchildren: Jaylie Brannon, Mya and Ayrianna Smith of Columbus, IN, Gracie and Allie Raye Stuthers, Braydan Reames, and Elsie Stuthers, all of Murphysboro, Blair and Avery Beyen and Beckett West of Mountain Home, AR And one brother Robert Leon Varner of Murphysboro.
Other Survivors include many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Kenneth Varner, and one grandson Austin Steffens.
In his younger years Mr. Varner loved being outdoors exploring, hunting and fishing. He was very skilled at crafting and throwing knives. He was a man that kept to himself, but could tell wonderful stories. He will be missed by his family, but never forgotten.
A military memorial service will be held October 16th, 2021 at the Murphysboro American Legion Post #127 Pavilion at 10 a.m.
