Virginia R. Ellis, 63, died at her home in Murphysboro on Friday, April 5, 2002.

She was born on Dec. 19, 1938, in Murphysboro, the daughter of Robert and Lula (Williams) Ellis, who preceded her in death.

She graduated from Murphysboro Township High School with the Class of 1956 and Weaver Airline Personnel School in Kansas City, Mo.

She spent three years in the US Navy Medical corps in Washington, D.C., where she married Carl D. Myer of Dallas Texas. Mr. Myer preceded her in death.

She recently retired from her position of office manager and assistant corporate treasurer for Stan Hoye Associates in Carbondale, where she had been employed for 37 years.

Ms. Ellis was a member of the First Christian Church in Murphysboro, the Jackson County Humane Society, the Humane Society of the United States and the Jackson County Historical Society, on whose board of directors she served for six years. She also was a member of and a major contributor to Sparc, a Springfield, Illinois, not-for-profit corporation which supports children and adults with mental retardation, epilepsy, autism, cerebral palsy and other developmental disabilities.

Ms. Ellis is survived by her brother, Michael, and partner David Decker of Springfield; aunts, Mary Mileur and Fern Hughes of Murphysboro; uncle, James Ellis of Bloomington, Ind.; and other relatives throughout the United States, including Mr. and Mrs. Roger Benson and family of Birmingham, Ala.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at Pettet Funeral Home in Murphysboro. Burial will be in Tower Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
