CARBONDALE -- Brad Allen Hinchcliff, 63, formerly of Murphysboro, passed away at 9:47 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014, in Carbondale from complications of lung cancer.

Brad was born Jan. 20, 1951, in Murphysboro, to the late Brad and Leona (Rosenberger) Hinchcliff.

He attended grade and high school in Murphysboro and was a graduate of the Murphysboro Township High School class of 1969. He attended the United Methodist Church in Murphysboro. He earned degrees in art education and education from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. He taught high school art, worked for the Probation Department, then worked for the Illinois Department of Corrections as a teacher. He had various teaching positions for the IDOC, including art, English as a second language and the GED program. He retired out as the principal for the GED program at the Illinois Department of Corrections Du Quoin Boot Camp. He was also a trained hostage negotiator for the IDOC.

Two of his greatest loves were the SIU Salukis and his dogs. Even when he lived several hours away, he made it back for the home games. He always had one or more dogs in his life, especially German shepherds.

Brad's interests included music, planes, motorcycles and working outdoors. He was in several bands in high school and college. A favorite memory was playing in pick-up bands during the 1970s, when traveling musicians would perform in Carbondale. He often told the story of playing in pick-up bands with B.B. King and Chuck Berry. He recently rekindled his love of music with several friends forming a garage band.

Brad was united in marriage to Suzanne Eaton on May 24, 1981. They had two children, Lea and Sarah Hinchcliff. Suzanne passed away in January of 2002. He was united in marriage to Mary Ann Chambers on Nov. 22, 2003. He and Mary Ann enjoyed almost 11 years of marriage.

Brad is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Chambers Hinchcliff; his daughters, Lea Hinchcliff and her husband, Daniel Smith, and Sarah Hinchcliff; stepson, James (Amy) Chambers; grandchildren, Archibald Eaton Smith, Cecilia Chambers and Dina Roberts; sisters, Karen Minkeman and Mary (Ron) Pelias; his beloved uncle, J.C Hinchcliff; and many loving brothers and sisters-in-law; nieces; nephews; cousins; and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; brother-in-law, Gordon Minkeman; uncle, Bill; aunt, Berneace Hinchcliff; and his cousin, Dell Hinchcliff.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 1, in Crawshaw Funeral Home in Murphysboro, with the Rev. Larry Gilbert of the United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow in St. Andrew Cemetery in Murphysboro. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today, Aug. 31, and from 8 to 11 a.m. Monday, both at the funeral home.

Memorials are encouraged and may be made to the SIH Cancer Center or to the St. Francis CARE, a no-kill animal shelter in Murphysboro. Memorials will be accepted at the funeral home.

Brad’s family wishes to give special thanks and recognition to the doctors, nurses, aides and therapists at SIH Cancer Center, SIU Family Practice, Memorial Hospital of Carbondale, Celtic Care and especially Dr. Ahmed. "Thank you for your loving care."
